Speed, Lack of Enforcement Behind Traffic Deaths
Dear Editor, Oct 24, 2025
There was another serious motor vehicle accident on Saddle Road yesterday. I've noticed an increase in accidents with fatalities since the state increased the speed limit on the DKI to 60MPH several years ago.
I've also noticed less of a police presence on this highway. There was an influx of traffic enforcement officers when the west side Saddle Road phase opened and during the Thirty Meter Telescope protests, but that presence has waned since then. The highway has turned into a free for all as a result.
I believe the solution to reducing serious motor vehicle accidents and fatalities on the DKI is reducing the speed limit and increasing speed enforcement on this highway.

Speed Cameras for Out-of-Control Drivers
Dear Editor, Oct 26, 2026
While I agree with Aaron Stene to a large extent, lowering the speed limit isn't going to accomplish what we'd like to see - and to some extent it would be counterproductive.
People commute on that road, to the other side, to Pohakuloa or to Maunakea. If they get paid for their commute it reduces the time they can be productive at their destination. If they don't get paid for their commute it likely has an effect on their sleep and their health.
The driver who crossed the line in this last accident was driving DUI and without license.
Getting speed monitors on there and if needed cameras to issue tickets would be a good idea though.
