Precisely as Predicted: Green’s Bogus Maui Fire Settlement Leads to ‘Thousands of Appeals’
HNN: …The fight continues over the multi-billion-dollar Maui wildfire settlement. The first checks are supposed to go out to survivors in the next few weeks, but there appears to be some holdups.
(IQ Test: Are you surprised by this?)
Judge Peter Cahill made it clear back in October that he wants checks distributed to survivors before the end of the year. However, at a court hearing on Friday, there was no mention of a timeline.
(CLUE: With Green’s backing, Cahill and fire victims’ lawyers excluded the insurance companies from the Maui settlement and now they are pretending to be surprised at the result. They hope you won’t notice.)
Instead, attorneys argued over who deserves the money.
“The insurance companies have continued to fight the individual plaintiffs every step of the way,” said Cynthia Wong, a Maui attorney for individual plaintiffs. “And there’s only one reason for that, and that’s their (our) greed.”…
(CLUE: Litigation for recovery from individual policyholders is EXACTLY what we said would happen when insurers were excluded from Cahill’s Maui ‘settlement.’)
More than 21,000 people have filed claims using personal attorneys.
… Attorneys for insurance companies said their clients have paid billions of dollars in claims, and they believe they have rights to the settlement as well. “The process should be efficient and as fair as possible, rather than creating hurdles and booby traps for us to fall under,” said Vince Raboteau, an attorney for an insurance company….
Judge Cahill said he expects to see thousands of appeals.
The next hearing is scheduled for December 17th….

Council passes Honolulu Police Department media access bill
SA: … The Council Wednesday voted 8-0, with Council member Matt Weyer absent, to adopt Bill 46, which calls for HPD to use its newly-created media crime alert system to provide limited media access to its radio communications.
The measure mandates the police chief to “adopt and implement a strategic plan and internal procedures for the timely release of certain public information to the media and the public, which must involve a written agreement between the department and local media outlets for the department to provide local media outlets with access to timely emergency messaging alerts; or to certain radio communications.”…
Routine radio communications by Honolulu police and firefighters became off-limits to news organizations and the general public in 2022 when a $15 million system that encrypts the frequencies used by nine city departments went into effect….
The news outlet also must meet one or more of the following criteria:
>> Be listed as a recognized legal or public notice publication, pursuant to state law.
>> Has a verifiable history of professional journalism, including the employment of full-time editorial staff, adherence to a publicly-posted code of journalistic ethics, and a history of continuous publication or broadcasting for at least 25 years….

Kawaiahao Church burial controversy nears resolution after 16 years
HNN: … Workers are filling a massive hole where more than 630 ʻiwi kupuna, or burial finds, believed to date back to the 19th century, were unearthed during a construction project for the church’s multi-purpose center starting in 2009.
The remains, ranging from a sliver of bone to a full skeleton, represent one of the largest burial finds in Hawaiʻi’s history.
After years of legal, cultural and bureaucratic controversy, the church abandoned plans for a new center and now hopes to have the ʻiwi reinterred by the end of this month….

Former Tripler gynecologist jailed amid misconduct investigation
SA: … An Army gynecologist accused of secretly recording thousands of patients without their consent was ordered into pretrial confinement this week and is currently being held in the Bell County Jail, Texas, after apparently violating conditions of liberty imposed by his commander.
Maj. Blaine McGraw, who was described in a recent lawsuit as a “predator in uniform” and is the subject of an Army criminal investigation, was a resident in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at Tripler Army Medical Center on Oahu between June 2019 and June 2023 and most recently was working at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas, until he was suspended Oct. 17.
Army investigators say that a search of McGraw’s devices uncovered a massive trove of videos and photos. Several women also have come forward accusing him of crude remarks and inappropriate touching during appointments. The investigation is ongoing….
