How Christmas Came to Hawaii
Kamehameha Schools free-tuition policy designed to protect trust against lawsuit
KITV: … "The alternative is that we're going to have a potential lawsuit that will go to the Supreme Court and if it doesn't go in our favor, we have so much to lose," Aki said.
Kamehameha said in a statement that "External parties have attempted to frame Pauahi's relationship with her po'e keiki through a Western contractual lens. Kamehameha Schools rejects that framing. This decision strengthens the clarity that a Kamehameha education is Pauahi's gift."
Sherry Broder, attorney who works on Native Hawaiian issues, said, "I do think that it will help in the lawsuit, on the part of the lawsuit where the plaintiffs claim that there is racial discrimination in contracting because there will no longer be a contract."…
The change in tuition policy is still subject to probate court approval….
(CLUE: There is still a contract.)

Irregular Safety Inspections Found as Building Fires Rise in Hawaii
CM: … Regular inspections of hotels and other accommodations required by the state of Hawaii are being inconsistently carried out by most county fire departments.
Three people died in two structure fires in Hilo on Hawaii island in October and November, in a downtown hotel and in a factory illegally converted to rentals, neither of which had ever been inspected, according to the county. Those buildings fall into the category for which state law calls for fire inspections at least every five years, with corrective actions issued where necessary.
In reality, staffing and resource limitations mean that all of the state’s county fire prevention bureaus only inspect a fraction of the state’s accommodations, leaving visitors and residents at risk. Hawaii County, for example, has three inspectors to oversee fire safety standards of an estimated 14,600 rental rooms spread out over 4,000 square miles….

'Limbo Field' Would Reflect The Precarious State Of UH Football
CB: … Compared to the national trends in stadium design, ours is as modest as that tiny backyard ADU you built for your mom and dad.
It’s a plain vanilla, Spartan little thing seating only 22,500, uncovered, with bleacher seats and no parking. There will be only a few luxury suites.
(For a totally upbeat stadium developer view of it, look here.)
Deficient? No, it’s all good because Limbo Field does the job. Don’t think crown jewel. Think finger in the dike preventing UH football from falling off the map.
Limbo Stadium’s look rightly doesn’t evoke big dreams. It evokes caution and ambivalence. Not so much a field of dreams but a shield against the nightmare changes in major college football that threatens to leave UH behind.
That nightmare is called “Name, Image, and Likeness.” NIL, for short. UH football may not be able to afford to pay to play….
