… NO Question 1: Food security

“Should the Charter require annual funding for a Food Security Fund, without having to simultaneously increase real property tax rates to fund the appropriation, to support programs and grants that provide locally grown or produced food to Oahu residents, as well as non- local food only in an emergency?”

The amendment would create a sixth city special fund for food security and increase the portion of estimated real property tax revenues dedicated to the city’s special funds from 2.5% to 3%…. (slush fund)

NO Question 3: Native Hawaiian and cultural stewardship

“Should an Office of ‘Oiwi Resources and Cultural Stewardship be established within the Office of the Mayor to oversee the management of ‘Oiwi resources within the City, develop related programs, and create a Cultural Advisory Council of kupuna, cultural practitioners, and community representatives?” (increase cost of housing by saying no to everything)

NO Question 4: Equity and inclusion

“Should a nine-member LGBTQIA+ Commission be established to advise the Mayor, City Council, and City agencies on matters affecting the LGBTQIA+ community and recommend policies, programs, and legislation promoting social, economic, and political equality?” (transsexualize your son)

NO Question 5: Election reform

“Beginning in 2032, should the City use ranked-choice voting to elect the Mayor, City Council, and Prosecuting Attorney, allowing voters to rank candidates in the order they prefer (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) in a single November election?”

If no candidate receives a majority of first choices, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and those ballots transferred to each voter’s next choice, repeating in rounds until a winner is determined. The City Clerk will also adopt rules and implement a public education program. (crackpot voting results driven by activists with lots of time on their hands to gaame out voting patterns)

NO Question 6: Constitutional rights and immigration policy

“Should the Charter be amended to require the Honolulu Police Department to 1) adopt policies to ensure the constitutional rights of all persons regardless of immigration or citizenship status are protected, and 2) assist federal immigration enforcement activities only when required by statute or court order, and after the requesting agency’s identity and authority have been confirmed?” … (block cooperation with feds—Trump will be gone soon, but this will stay)

NO Question 16: Civic participation

“Should permanent resident aliens who are residents of the City and County of Honolulu be permitted to serve on City boards and commissions?” (we citizens must govern ourselves)

YES Question 20: Ethics and accountability

“Should the Charter make a Councilmember, the Mayor, or the Prosecuting Attorney ineligible for election to any City office for two years if impeached, or if the official resigns after an impeachment petition has been filed, consistent with the provision for being recalled from office?”… (two years is pathetic, but it is better than nothing.)

State To Decide Fate Of Gay-Oriented Ewa Dream House Charter School After Board Quits

CB: … Public documents don’t specify why the three final members of the board resigned, and chair Shaylan Arneho did not respond to requests for comment. But a former consultant for DreamHouse said tensions among the board, school leadership and outside partners had grown in recent months. …

Through the spring and summer, DreamHouse was still seeking new members to fill its board, said Richard Seder, who served on the board until January and then worked as a consultant for the school through June. But Seder said he stopped his recruitment efforts amid tensions between school leadership, its governing board and outside partners helping finance DreamHouse’s high school building.

Unlike traditional public schools, charters are responsible for finding and paying for their own campuses. Since DreamHouse is a state entity that can’t take on debt, the school has an associated nonprofit that financed the $26 million high school campus through municipal bonds.

But a provision in the bond agreement requires the nonprofit to hire an independent consultant to evaluate DreamHouse’s academics, finances and operations. The agreement, which is between the nonprofit and bondholders, says the school must adopt the consultant’s recommendations.

The requirement seems unusual because a nonprofit typically can’t force a charter school to do anything, even if it is responsible for the campus’ facilities, Payne said. Improvements and evaluations of academics or school operations are usually the responsibility of the governing board. …

Passing One Climate Test, Failing the Other: -- Imported Biofuels and Hawaiʻi’s Two Carbon Ledgers

IM: … Hawaiian Electric’s plan for 2045 has a simple answer to its hardest question. What happens to the oil-fired and other combustion units that keep the lights on when the sun is down and the wind is still? Convert them to biofuel. Hawaiian Electric’s first Integrated Grid Plan says it outright: “The existing fossil fuel–powered firm generation is converted to 100% biofuel by 2045” (Hawaiian Electric, Integrated Grid Plan). The utility’s IGP modeling assumptions also say firm units “must be on biofuel from 2045 onward” to meet the 100% RPS target (Hawaiian Electric response to Order No. 38253).

“Biofuel” is not one fuel. It is a label covering fuels with very different climate impacts. And Hawaiʻi has two climate laws that measure carbon in two different ways. A fuel can pass one test and fail the other….

How US states ‘mistakenly’ added 30,000 non-citizens to voter rolls

HTH: … US states may have added more than 30,000 self-declared non-citizens to the nation’s voter rolls since 2000 because of software glitches and clerical errors made while processing their driver’s license and state ID applications, according to official records reviewed by Reuters….

New Jersey announced the most recent high-profile case of errant voter registrations over the summer, saying a technology glitch added about 6,600 non-citizens to voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024, even though they answered “no” when asked if they were citizens while applying for licenses and IDs.

Bureaucratic errors have also been reported in at least 11 other states bringing the nationwide figure above 30,000 since 2000, according to the Reuters reporting.

A nationwide tally of such mistakes has not previously been reported….

The data showed errors occurred in California, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Virginia….
