Ed Case: Democrats should “come up with actual solutions”

CB: … All but assured another term, the congressman is campaigning and plotting a future where Democrats “come up with actual solutions.” ….

Case, 74, has ambitious goals over the next two years. Working with the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, he recently introduced gerrymandering reform legislation that seeks to reduce partisan influence in congressional redistricting and tamp down on the political arms race reshaping electoral maps across the country.

He’d also like to address the federal deficit, seek bipartisan solutions for immigration reform and address Social Security, which is projected to become insolvent by 2032 and result in retirees seeing significant cuts in their benefits.

Each item on this agenda, he said, would likely require working across party lines.

“Some members of my party think that participation in the Problem Solvers is not appropriate,” Case said. “But I think they’re dead wrong. You have to have some space where you actually try to solve problems on a bipartisan basis.” …

Rate Hike News: Why HECO Wants Rebasing

IM: … Under Hawaii's unique Performance-Based Regulation (PBR) framework adopted in 2020, HECO’s base rates were locked into a fixed five-year cycle (2021-26) with rigid formulas for annual adjustments.

But the reality diverged drastically from what was anticipated. In real terms, each year HECO received less revenue than was anticipated. Rebasing will not make up for these lost funds. Rather it will resent the base rate for the next five-year period (2027-32)….

“HECO wants to increase its profits.” Under performance-based regulation, HECO no longer earns more by spending more on capital projects. Rebasing resets the base rate for the next five years. The PUC will decide what portion of the request, if any, is justified.

“Renewable energy itself is driving the increase.” The main driver is inflation ($83M). About $45M covers fossil-fuel plants being retired earlier than planned as part of the clean-energy transition ….

Hawai‘i County Fire Commission reschedules interviews with 6 finalists for chief

BIN: … The Hawai‘i County Fire Commission has rescheduled candidate interviews for a new Hawai‘i County fire chief after Hurricane Nolo forced the postponement of the original dates.

The six finalists now will be interviewed on Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. at the Hawai‘i County Liquor Commission Conference Room, located at the Hilo Lagoon Centre, 101 Aupuni Street, Unit 230.

The commission plans to select the new chief on Oct. 22.

The candidates originally were to be interviewed in September, but the approaching storm led to the closure of nearly all county services.

On Tuesday, the volunteer commission met during a special meeting in Hilo to hammer out the new dates and location to interview the finalists in the running to replace Chief Kazuo Todd, who died unexpectedly on Dec. 14 at age 45 ….

Woman pleads guilty in Wahiawa attack, theft case involving woman with special needs

HNN: … According to court documents, Keola admitted that on April 17, 2025, she restrained Ng with the intent to cause bodily injury or terrorize her. As part of the amended kidnapping charge, the plea states Ng was voluntarily released alive and in a safe place before trial.

Keola also admitted to assaulting Ng and attempting to take the contents of her backpack. Two other theft counts involved gift cards belonging to Ng.

Under the plea agreement, Keola agreed to a four-year probation term and 18 months in jail, with credit for time already served. She has been in custody since September 2025.

The agreement also prohibits her from contacting Ng or the other juveniles involved in the underlying incidents and requires her to participate in anger management classes….

Gays Adopt Child from NICU

HNN: … They embarked on their adoption journey in 2022 with an agency licensed in Hawaii and California. A social worker met with them several times…

“We had to be fingerprinted and background checked and all those sorts of things. We went through a couple of seminars on raising a child,” Harris said.

It wasn’t an easy process. As the years passed, they faced multiple rejections.

“We were starting to think, ‘Hey, this might not happen.’ And then we got a text one night in September of last year, saying, ‘Are you interested in adopting a little one in San Francisco?’”

In the blink of an eye, they were on a plane to the city by the bay as their soon-to-be daughter, Kody, started her life in the NICU.

“We’re standing at the NICU door, I was the scared-est I’ve ever been, ready to hit that button,” Minas recalled. “I was terrified but then, as soon as I saw her it was like instant love.”

Not only was it a long journey that tested their patience and their hopes, it also was an expensive one.

“The whole journey’s cost around probably $50,000,” Minas said….
