Antivaxxer Cordery was the Worst-Performing Republican Gubernatorial Candidate in Hawaii History
SA: … Gov. Josh Green won a resounding reelection victory Tuesday as he and his running mate, outgoing Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami, defeated the Republican ticket by a record-setting 50 percentage points.
(THIRD READ UPDATE: Green/Kawakami 72.0% (263,274) vs Cordery/Anthony 26.1% (95,519) -- A 45.9% margin, still by far the worst showing ever for a Hawaii Republican gubernatorial candidate.)
The margin over the Republican ticket of Gary Cordery and Daniel Anthony is the largest gubernatorial victory in Hawaii, topping Gov. David Ige’s 2018 reelection when he won by about 29 percentage points….
(Editor’s Note: Cordery was an antivaxxer and an antisemite. Republicans facilitate Green’s corruption by putting such a worthless candidate on the ballot. Antivaxxers can help improve the Republican Party by quitting politics. COVID is over. It was your moment. Everybody got a good look at you and rejected you. BTW, in 2022 Republicans were saved from having mentally ill antivaxxer BJ Penn as their candidate only by the last-minute intervention of Duka Aiona. So, this insanity has carried through two gubernatorial cycles. Will the few leftover Hawaii Republicans learn anything from this or will their remnants continue to spiral downward?)

Democrats expected to pick up seats in Hawaii Legislature
SA: … Five incumbents in the state Legislature — all Republicans — are facing defeat based on Tuesday night’s second printout results representing most votes cast, though a few races remain too close to call.
3rd Read UPDATE: Three westside Republicans pull ahead -- meth dealer's son to win Lahaina?
Final results may have some trailing candidates pull out victories, but after a second batch of votes counted, the number of Democrats dominating the institution is flirting with going up by six.
Democrat Sne Patel and Green Party contender Pa‘ele Kiakona were neck and neck to unseat Republican incumbent Rep. Elle Cochran (R, Waihee-Lahaina- Lahainaluna) as one of the most dominant victories among candidates trying to displace a sitting lawmaker….
Another Democrat with a wide lead over a Republican incumbent was Jamie Wataru, a state-employed journeyman plumber and former Hawaii president of the United Public Workers union who was besting Rep. Joe Gedeon (R, Hawaii Kai- Kalama Valley).
In one unique race on the ballot, Rep. Kanani Souza (R, Kapolei-Makakilo) held a modest lead over Republican challenger Sheila Medeiros in a rerun of their Aug. 8 primary election race that was initially declared a tie but later was invalidated by the Hawaii Supreme Court because county election officials mistakenly gave two ballots to voters registered in a different district.
Democrat Danielle Bass dominated Republican Kelly Kitashima. Bass was appointed by Gov. Josh Green on Aug. 9 to fill the Senate District 18 seat vacated by Sen. Michelle Kidani (D, Mililani Town-Waipio Gentry-Royal Kunia) after she resigned June 30 for health reasons….
Another race with no incumbent appeared too close to call. In that race, former Republican House member Bob McDermott was narrowly leading Democrat Markus Owens, a former University of Hawaii baseball player and broadcast commentator, to succeed Sen. Kurt Fevella (R, Ewa Beach-Ocean Pointe-Iroquois Point).
McDermott, who served 16 years in the state House from 1996 to 2002 and from 2012 to 2022, tied Fevella in the primary election, and then won a random drawing to break the tie. Fevella petitioned Hawaii’s high court to invalidate the tie on grounds similar to Souza’s challenge, but Fevella filed his challenge after a deadline.
In a third race without an incumbent, Democrat Corey Rosenlee, a public school teacher and former Hawaii State Teachers Association leader, overwhelmed Republican Danny Degracia, an ordained minister and unionized state Department of Health program specialist.
Degracia and Rosenlee competed to succeed Rep. Elijah Pierick (R, Royal Kunia-Waipahu-Honouliuli). Pierick decided to seek a seat in the Senate instead of running for reelection in the House. In that Senate race, Pierick lost badly to incumbent Sen. Rachele Lamosao (D, Pearl City-Waipahu-West Loch).
Lamosao was first elected to the Legislature in 2022 when she became a member of the House. In December, Green appointed her to fill the Senate District 19 seat vacated by then-Sen. Henry Aquino, who resigned to become a lobbyist.
Incumbents typically have an advantage at winning and retaining their positions, and one leading in a very close race was Rep. Chris Muraoka (R, Waianae-Makaha) against Democrat Kalehua Kaopua.
Incumbents trailing by close margins included Rep. Garner Shimizu (R, Moanalua-Aliamanu-Foster Village) against Democratic challenger Micah Aiu. The race was the third time the two candidates have faced off. In 2022, Aiu beat Shimizu. Then Shimizu beat Aiu in 2024.
Rep. Julie Reyes Oda (R, Ewa Beach-Iroquois Point) also was flirting with defeat in a tight race against Democratic challenger Rose Martinez, who served one term before losing to Reyes Oda in 2024….

Rail: Blangiardi Pushing Permanent Multi-Billion Dollar GE Tax Increase to Fund Rail ‘In Perpetuity’
HNN: … Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said he wants to see the general excise tax surcharge for rail made permanent as city leaders prepare to ask state lawmakers for continued transit funding.
Speaking Tuesday on “Spotlight Now,” Blangiardi said discussions with the state Legislature during the upcoming session will focus on extending the GET surcharge to support future rail segments.
“I’d like to see it in perpetuity,” Blangiardi said. “This is going to be built for many years to come.”
The mayor noted that the current rail route to Halekauwila and South streets will be fully paid for upon completion, but said long-term financing mechanisms will be required to extend service to destinations such as the University of Hawaiʻi and Waikīkī….

Stiffed by HMSA: Family of teen killed in 2023 hit-and-run receives $60K hospital bill
HNN: … Nearly four years after Sara Yara, 16, was killed in a hit-and-run on Kapiolani Boulevard, her family is preparing to see justice served on the man behind the wheel.
But a $60,000 hospital bill, sent a year after the teen’s death, looms over the family.
On Feb. 15, 2023, Yara was hit and killed while on her way to McKinley High School at an intersection on Kapiolani Boulevard….
The driver, Mitchel Miyashiro, was unlicensed and had more than 160 traffic citations before the deadly incident. After spending several years exhausting his legal options, he pleaded no contest, forgoing a jury trial….
A day after HNN reached out to Queen’s, Sainatan said she received a call from the hospital’s billing department.
“It was totally out of the blue,” she said. “They basically explained that the reason it took so long was because they were trying to get HMSA to pay some of the bill, but HMSA never did, so it bounced back. I’m grateful they were trying to make it work and call me.”
One health insurance expert said it’s likely Yara’s insurance believes a third party is responsible for the bill. In this case, the driver behind the wheel, which is why her health insurance didn’t cover any of it…..
In the meantime, Miyashiro is scheduled to appear at Honolulu Circuit Court Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Saniatan said she hopes he spends at least 10 years behind bars….
