News Release from Elwin Ahu for Lieutenant Governor, February 27, 2014

Honolulu HI, February 27, 2014:  With family, friends, and supporters at his side, former Hawaii Circuit Court Judge and Senior pastor Elwin Ahu formally announced his candidacy for Hawaii Lieutenant Governor as a Republican.

In his announcement, Judge Ahu described why he is running:

The preamble to our Hawaii Constitution is a succinctly sets forth the foundational framework for our beautiful Hawaiian Islands, yet so many are not familiar with its provisions, including many of our current governmental leaders. And their repeated disregard for the values delineated in this precious treasure compels me to enter the race for Lieutenant Governor.

We, the people of Hawaii, grateful for Divine Guidance, and mindful of our Hawaiian heritage and uniqueness as an island State, dedicate our efforts to fulfill the philosophy decreed by the Hawaii State motto, “Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono.”

We reserve the right to control our destiny, to nurture the integrity of our people and culture, and to preserve the quality of life that we desire. We reaffirm our belief in a government of the people, by the people and for the people, and with an understanding and compassionate heart toward all the peoples of the earth, do hereby ordain and establish this constitution for the State of Hawaii. [Am Const Con 1978 and election Nov 7, 1978]

For several years the “heart” of our Constitution has been challenged, not in the judicial courts of law, but in the people’s courts of public opinion. Our government leaders are no longer grateful, it seems, for Divine Guidance and mindful of our Hawaiian heritage and in the process we have lost our uniqueness as an island State. Many that I have already talked to have voiced their concerns that the righteous philosophy of our State motto has not been protected, nor has it been preserved. Fairness, truth and justice have not been upheld and the people have lost their right to control their own destiny. Integrity and the quality of life that is desired, and deserved, is devolving into a culture that was not intended by our founding fathers. Apathy seems to rule the majority fueled by a disbelief that the government is “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Distrust and disingenuous has replaced the Constitution’s mandate that our government have a “compassionate heart” for all people, especially those who call Hawaii “Home.”

My heart is to restore the heart of our beloved Constitution and rebuild trust of the people in their own government, to return fairness to the process by which the government is run, as “public servants” of the people, by the people and for the people.

1. To return fairness to the process we call democracy where the people’s voices will be heard and given its due consideration;

2. To create processes that would insure that our uniqueness as an island state is being given foremost consideration when enacting any of our laws;

3. To restore public confidence in a government that stands for righteousness, fairness, truth and justice to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Our campaign will draw together the hearts and spirits of all who want Hawaii to return to its original, untainted values we all shared when we grew up in these islands. Knowing that times do change, we need leaders who will permit such change, but hold true to the values our kupuna established when our islands welcomed everyone from around the world; values that make Hawaii the unique island state that we had come to love and trust. I hope that you will join our efforts as we move to restore true Aloha to our island home we call Hawaii.

Ahu describes his campaign as one that he hopes will draw together the hearts and spirits of all who want to restore Hawaii’s values to what they once were.

Ahu is married to his wife Joy and has tow sons.

Ahu currently serves as Senior Pastor of New Hope Metro.
