Special Election: Dozens of articles in national media -- nearly none in Advertiser, Star-Bulletin

As Charles Djou’s fortunes have waxed, local media coverage of the CD1 Special Election race has waned.

With one week to go before ballots are mailed, with A Daily KOS poll showing Djou in the lead, the hottest political ticket in Hawaii has nearly evaporated from the pages of the Star-Bulletin and the Advertiser.

The decline in coverage is inversely proportional to the improvement in the poll numbers of Republican candidate Charles Djou.  The Democrat media is attempting to avoid coverage which might have the effect of mobilizing Djou’s voters.  They don’t want to let his potential supporters know that there is a chance for a Djou victory in the May 1-22 ballot.

When the KOS poll showing Charles Djou leading the race with 32% vs 29% for Case and 28% for Hanabusa became public, local media falsely headlined the story as a “statistical tie”—a concept rejected by professional pollsters.  There was no analysis of the poll’s internalsHawai’i Free Press and POLITICO correctly headlined the story as “Djou leading”.

The conflict of interest of Hawaii print media is obvious.  Dan H. Case, the uncle of Democratic candidate Ed Case, is a minority owner of the Star-Bulletin and is now part of the group of investors buying the Advertiser.

So, for the benefit of news-starved Hawaii readers, we at Hawai’i Free Press have assembled dozens of articles—including a few about the Hawaii gubernatorial race--from national media of all political persuasions for your reading pleasure.
