“Continuing to Doubt the North Koreans Could be Dangerous to Hawaii”

News Release from Office of Rep Gene Ward, (R-Hawaii Kai) December 6, 2017

HONOLULU, HAWAIʻI – Rep. Gene Ward (R-Hawaii Kai, Kalama Valley) said today that it is well past time to take Kim Jong Un seriously.

On November 29th, North Korea launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile armed with what it claimed was a “super large heavy warhead.” Analysts said the flight time and distance of the latest test clearly indicates that North Korean missiles can reach anywhere on the mainland — and certainly Hawaii. The missile soared 2,500 miles into space, staying aloft for 53 minutes in a “fly-ball” trajectory. It fell into the Sea of Japan 620 miles from its launch point.

Ward said America needs to stop thinking the North Koreans are not capable of creating and stabilizing a nuclear device that fits on the tip of a warhead.

“This is like thinking a man pointing a gun at you wouldn’t figure out how to pull the trigger and kill you,”  Ward said.

Ward has written to U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis and to President Donald Trump, encouraging them to keep the diplomatic pressure on North Korea. He also has written to Gov. David Ige, urging “shelter-in-place” drills be implemented by the Department of Education.

“Now is not the time to be contemplating our navels or trying to second guess Kim Jong Un,” Ward said. “It’s time to prepare for the worst.”
