Finalists named for student appointment to Board of Regents

UH News January 11, 2018

The Candidate Advisory Council (CAC) for the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents has presented a list of candidates to Gov. David Ige to fill one student seat for a two-year appointment beginning July 1, 2018, subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

The finalists

  • Kelli K.K. Acopan
  • Ian F. Tapu
  • Brian P. Wild

Finalist biographies are available at the Candidate Advisory Council website.

CAC began accepting applications to fill the vacancy last fall after contacting and encouraging student groups to nominate candidates. The council placed print advertisements and issued news releases encouraging applications.

All applications were thoroughly and comprehensively reviewed and screened by all CAC members.

CAC is required by law to conduct recruiting efforts, accept and screen applications, interview candidates and submit to the governor the names of nominees to serve as regents of the UH System. Regent positions are voluntary non-compensated appointments.

Candidate lists are compiled after a comprehensive review and selection process, which is solely and exclusively merit-based and according to procedures set forth in state statutes and the councilʻs administrative rules.

“The Candidate Advisory Council members sincerely thank all the students who applied for this seat on the Board of Regents. We had a number of qualified applicants, and we are truly inspired by their desire to serve the university and the State of Hawaiʻi,” said CAC Chair Brigitte Yoshino.

The Board of Regents is the governing body of UH and consists of 15 members. Representation includes seven from the City and County of Honolulu, two from Hawaiʻi County, two from Maui County, one from Kauaʻi County, two at-large and one UH student.

CAC members serve voluntarily and are not paid.
