Republican Responses to Ige Inaugural Speech

News Release from Honolulu Republican Party, December 3, 2018

“It’s shameful and outrageous that Governor Ige is so desperate to change the subject from his abysmal record in office that he feels compelled to attack President Trump’s lawful and appropriate defense of our borders.  So much for the optimism and bipartisanship and collegial spirit that Ige pretended to advocate during the rest of his tired speech.  David Ige wants to distract folks from record homelessness, skyrocketing home prices, unaffordable rents, low wages, over taxation, and the reputation as the worst place to make a living in the entire country.  While he watches local families get torn apart as more and more residents move away from Hawaii in record numbers, Governor Ige wants us to believe that the real problem is at the Mexican border.  I would warn Governor Ige to be careful about poking the lion, since his rail project is currently under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s office.” -- Brett Kulbis, Chairman - Honolulu County Republican Party

News Release from House Republican Caucus, December 3, 2018

HONOLULU, HI – Governor David Y. Ige and Lieutenant Governor Josh Green were sworn in by Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald at the Hawaii State Capitol Rotunda at 12:00pm. The Lieutenant Governor and Governor delivered remarks setting their priorities for the next four years. House Minority Caucus members responded to their addresses as follows:

"As a former teacher, I look forward contributing to Governor Ige's initiative to reform our schools. Our keiki deserve the best education to ensure brighter futures for the next generation." – Representative Val Okimoto

"I look forward to my continued work with the Governor on cooling schools, affordable housing, and creating a new economy based on innovation." – Representative Bob McDermott

"I am pleased that the Governor has called for unity and wishes to work with all parties. As Minority Leader, I am committed to working with his administration to address Hawaii's biggest issues. However, the Governor's slights at the federal administration do not help us to move forward together.

I commend Lieutenant Governor Green for prioritizing Hawaii's homeless epidemic over the next four years and am cautiously optimistic as he works to deliver on his campaign promises. We wish them both all the best." – Representative Gene Ward
