Honolulu District Court reopens after construction mishap

SA Aug 22, 2023: … Security Resources, a contractor for the state, damaged the ceiling of the parking garage’s below-street level deck on Alakea Street.

Kinimaka said earlier Monday that several structural firms were “investigating the impacts of the damage and waiting for the final results to make the determination on final steps.”

The damage occurred during the installation of security systems in the parking garage, but there was no damage to the courthouse itself, she said….

(If the damage is in the garage, why are the 7th and 10th floor courtrooms closed?)

UPDATE Aug 17, 2023: There is no obvious external sign of structural problems, but guards at Kauikeaouli Hale, Thursday, were telling members of the public that they are 'playing it by ear' when asked if the Court would reopen Monday.  When this reporter identified himself as a member of the press, one guard clammed up saying only that they were told not to make any comments.  Judiciary press representatives referred us to DAGS for comment.   Christine Kinimaka, Public Works Administrator, DAGS – Public Works Division responded: “This matter is still under investigation.  It is premature for us to comment at this time.”
