Broken Promises II Premiere and Panel Discussion

from Rep Gene Ward, R-Hawaii Kai

In 1921, Prince Kuhio authored an Act of Congress that promised 203,000 acres of land to restore land and dignity to Native Hawaiians. Over 100 years later, only 9,800 homesteads have been opened and 28,000 Native Hawaiians remain on a waitlist. Join us for a discussion about what went wrong and what can be done about this century-long problem in the present day.

Panelists will include leaders in the Native Hawaiian community and experts in this topic:

  • Rob Perez: Retired reporter investigating native lands dispossession in Hawaii whose research laid the foundation for Broken Promises I and II
  • Governor John Waihee: First Governor of Native Hawaiian ancestry
  • Kali Watson: DHHL Director and Chairman of the Hawaiian Homes Commission
  • Peter Savio: Housing expert and advocate for Native Hawaiian housing
  • Peter Apo: Former OHA Trustee and President of a Hawaiian cultural consulting service
  • Senator Kurt Fevella: Member of the Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs
  • Representative Diamond Garcia: Representative of Hawaiian homestead areas
  • Producer of Broken Promises II / Moderator of Panel Discussion – Representative Gene Ward: State House and strong advocate of Native Hawaiian causes

Join us for the premiere of Broken Promises II and panel discussion on Monday, March 25th from 3pm-5pm at the Hawaii State Capitol Room 325.
