The first- and second-prize winners in each division will also have their essays published in the magazine of the Coolidge Foundation

from Grassroot Institute

The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, based in Plymouth, Vermont, is inviting high school and college students nationwide to participate in an essay competition about whether the 1920 federal law known as the Jones Act has helped or harmed America. The word limit for the essays is 1,000 for high school students and 1,500 for college students. The entry deadline is Sept. 10. For more information about the contest, click on the image above or go here.

For information on why the Jones Act has mostly harmed the U.S., visit Grassroot's website starting here. Grassroot policy briefs on the Jones Act include:

>> "U.S. maritime jobs disappearing despite Jones Act," December 2024.

>> "Alaska: The Jones Act's original victim," November 2021.

>> "Five myths about the Jones Act," July 2021.

>> "Quantifying the cost of the Jones Act to Hawaii," July 2020.

>> "The Jones Act in perspective," 2017.

Any materials produced by Grassroot Scholar and Cato Institute trade policy analyst Colin Grabow are also highly recommended, including his book "The Case Against the Jones Act," published in 2020, which features an essay by Grassroot President Keli‘i Akina titled "Updating The Jones Act for the 21st Century."

Finally, go here to check out Grassroot's recent TikTok post about Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown going back in time to try head off the calamity caused by the Jones Act.
