County Board of Ethics hiring full-time staff, slated to meet Oct. 8
News Release from County of Maui,Aug 29, 2025
The County of Maui Board of Ethics is postponing its Sept. 10 meeting to focus on restructuring and hiring efforts. The next meeting is scheduled Oct. 8, 2025.
Board of Ethics Executive Director and Legal Counsel Lauren M. Akitake, who started on Aug. 1, is prioritizing onboarding new staff and establishing the Board’s first full-time office. This transition includes revising ethics rules to better serve the community, reflecting the expanded role of the Board.
“Establishing the County’s Board of Ethics office marks an important step forward,” Akitake said. “It represents our commitment to strengthening ethics standards, expanding capabilities and meeting the evolving needs and expectations of our community.”
The public voted last November to amend the County of Maui Charter, allowing the all-volunteer Board of Ethics to hire full-time staff.
The County Board of Ethics investigates ethics complaints, advises on potential conflicts of interest, and promotes accountability among County officers and employees.
