GOVERNOR GREEN LOWERS FLAGS FOR PATRIOT DAY

HONOLULU — Governor Josh Green, M.D., has ordered that the United States flag and the Hawaiʻi state flag be flown at half-staff at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol and at all state offices and agencies, as well as the Hawaiʻi National Guard in the state of Hawaiʻi, from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, September 11, to mark Patriot Day.

On September 11, 2001, nearly three thousand civilian and first responder lives were taken far too soon. With thousands more injured, the effects of the 9/11 attacks have left a lasting impact on our nation and the precious communities damaged by this tragedy.

“May this day serve as a reminder of the courage and heroic strength of our first responders and countless other brave citizens,” said Governor Green. “Today we stand with those lost, those grieving and survivors who are forever burdened by the memory. Let their bravery and resilience inspire us as we extend our deepest condolences and consolations.”

Separately, at the direction of the President of the United States, Governor Green has ordered that the the United States flag and the Hawaiʻi state flag be flown at half-staff at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol and at all state offices and agencies, as well as the Hawaiʻi National Guard in the state of Hawaiʻi effective immediately through sunset on Sunday, September 14, in memory of Charlie Kirk.

“There is no place in Hawaiʻi or in our country for political violence. We may disagree on policies, but we must never allow division to turn into hate or harm. Democracy only survives when we resolve our differences through respect, dialogue and compassion,” said Governor Green.

U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda released this statement:

“No matter what side of the aisle we’re on, we are all human -- speaking our truth, standing for what we believe in, connecting with others. When someone is taken by political violence, it tears at the fabric of our democracy and our shared humanity. My heart breaks for Charlie Kirk’s wife and young children. He did not deserve to die. Political violence has no place in a free society, and we are long past the point where thoughts and prayers are enough. We need action, common ground, and the courage to stop senseless tragedies before they happen again.”

U.S. Representative Ed Case released this statement:

“I am deeply saddened that this life of passion and contribution was cut short by an act of senseless violence in the exercise of his rights as a fellow citizen to free belief and speech. All Americans no matter our beliefs should plead for a return to civil discourse and a rejection of violence in any form to prevent and influence the debates and decisions we must have. That should be the lesson and legacy of this tragic loss.”

KHON: Local leaders express sympathy following death of Charlie Kirk

Minority Leader Rep. Lauren Matsumoto and the Minority Caucus issued a statement denouncing political violence.

“The tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk today is horrifying, heartbreaking and unacceptable. Charlie worked tirelessly to advocate for this country and encourage public debate,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, their two children and his extended ʻohana during this time of unimaginable loss. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, violence is never the answer.”

In addition to the statement from the caucus, Minority Floor Leader Rep. Diamond Garcia called the killing “senseless.”

“Charlie’s voice inspired many across the country, and this senseless act of violence leaves behind a void that words cannot fill,” Garcia said. “We can only hope that one day people will be judged by their character and what they did for humanity rather than the color of their party.”
