The SD19 Democrats are in the process of selecting three names from which Gov Josh Green will pick Aquino’s replacement.
The application period was open Oct 2-8, 2025 and six candidates applied:

The Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi – Oʻahu County Democrats is accepting expressions of interest from qualified candidates for the newly vacant Hawaiʻi State Senate District 19 seat, representing Pearl City, Waipahu, West Loch Estates, Honoʻuliʻoli, and Hoʻopili.
Senator Henry Aquino announced his retirement on September 24, 2025, effective November 30, 2025. We extend our gratitude to Senator Aquino for his years of distinguished service in Senate District 19 and House Districts 38 and 35.
Pursuant to the DPH Constitution (Article VIII, Section 10) and Bylaws (Article IX, Sections 4 & 5), the Party must submit three nominees to Governor Green for his selection of a short-term replacement to serve until the next general election.
Eligible applicants must:
- Be enrolled in the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi for at least six months,
- Be in good standing, and
- Reside within Senate District 19 at the time of appointment.
The Selection Body, composed of district and precinct officers residing within Senate District 19, will meet on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:00 PM via Zoom to select three nominees.
Each candidate will have up to three minutes to speak, and each member of the Selection Body may vote for up to three candidates.
The final list of three nominees will be transmitted to the State Party Chair, who will forward the names to Governor Green for consideration.
The Governor has until January 29, 2026 to make an appointment.

HPR Oct 6, 2025: … The Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi Oʻahu County Committee is looking for candidates in the Pearl City-Waipahu area to fill the soon-to-be vacant state senate District 19 seat.
Sen. Henry Aquino announced he would be retiring from the Legislature at the end of November.
To fill the vacancy, the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi will choose three residents who live in the district to be considered and submit those names to Gov. Josh Green….
