States With The Most (And Fewest) Multigenerational Households.
from FinanceBuzz.com, March, 2026
Housing affordability pressures and caregiving needs are changing household dynamics across the U.S., making multigenerational living an increasingly relevant trend.
Living with grandparents, parents, and children under the same roof is becoming more common in the U.S. And while just 3.8% (nearly 1 in 26) of households are multigenerational, some states have percentages more than double the national average.
To see where this shift is especially prevalent, FinanceBuzz analyzed American Community Survey data from the Census Bureau.
A few key findings:
-
Hawaii leads the nation, where about 1 in 13 households include three generations living together.
-
California, Texas, New Jersey, and Nevada also rank among the states where multigenerational living is most common.
-
In contrast, parts of the Midwest and Northern Plains rarely see this arrangement, with states like North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming reporting the lowest shares.
