Thousands of Big Island residents turned out Thursday to give a final salute to Marine Lance Corporal Christopher Camero who died July 15th as the results of injuries sustained in Helmand Province Afghanistan on July 6th, 2011. State flags were ordered to fly at half-staff.

Students from Waimea Middle School and HPA lined both sides of the road in Waimea as Camero’s mile-long funeral procession left Annunciation Catholic Church.

In Waikoloa, residents lined the roadside as the procession passed through town on the way to West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.

As the cortege passed through South Kohala, groups of resort employees, firefighters, and construction workers stopped to pay their final respects.

And electrical workers hoisted a large flag over the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery entrance as the motorcade arrived.

A Marine guard fired a salute as L Cpl Camero was laid to rest.
