By Gov. Linda Lingle @ 2:50 AM :: 6112 Views :: Energy, Environment

News Release from

HONOLULU - Former Governor Linda Lingle, candidate for Hawaii's open U.S. Senate seat, released the following statement recognizing the importance of Independence Day, and honoring all of the men and women who defend America's freedom:

"On July 4th, 1776, our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, creating the United States of America. In doing so, they announced to the world that governments should derive their powers from the consent of the people. This uniquely American document created a government that was based on our belief in liberty and the right of every person to pursue happiness.

"These words have served as inspiration for people everywhere who look to this Declaration as an expression of freedom that transcends cultural, generational and political borders across the world.

"Today, our brave men and women in the military fight to protect this freedom that we hold so dear, and for this I extend my deepest gratitude to those serving overseas and here at home. America will never forget the great sacrifices they are making to protect our country. The Fourth of July is a time for Americans worldwide to give thoughtful remembrance to their sacrifices, which provide us the opportunity to live as a free society. In honoring our servicemen and women, we also celebrate the bravery of those who have carried the torch of freedom since our founding.

"236 years ago, founding father John Adams declared upon this momentous day that America's independence must be 'celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival' and be 'solemnized with Pomp and Parade' and 'Illuminations from one end of this Continent to the other from this time forward forever more.'

"On Wednesday July 4th, 2012, we have an opportunity to honor our founders, our brave servicemen and women, and their 'ohana by passing on the values that make America the symbol of freedom and prosperity the world has come to know. On this special day, and continuing into the future, let us put aside our differences and work to promote prosperity and liberty, here at home and around the world."
