Hanabusa, Hirono Co-Sponsor Bill Threatening Closure of Catholic Charities Adoption and Foster Care

by Andrew Walden

Hawaii Reps Mazie Hirono and Colleen Hanabusa are co-sponsoring H.R. 1681, the so-called "Every Child Deserves a Family Act."  HR1681 decertifies any adoption or foster care agency which does not assign children to same sex couples.  In spite of the fact that the First Amendment protects freedom of religion, there is no exemption for religious charities in this bill.

The recently published New Family Structures Study shows that children in the hands of same-sex couples are “far more likely to report being sexually victimized, to be on welfare, or to be currently unemployed.”

By forcing church-run charities to hand children over to homosexuals, Hirono and Hanabusa’s bill would effectively eliminate all Catholic Charities adoption and foster care in the United States of America since Catholic Charities will not hand adoptive or foster children over to homosexual couples.

Waianae resident John Roco, founder of Saint Damien Advocates, explains: "it really has come to a climax, this fight to eliminate any religious organizations doing the same tradition of charitable work- they have since Saint Damien’s time and before- because a religious organization will not give children to gay couples."

“It seems like the ones who are intolerant, are those active in the gay and lesbian cause- who do not want any foster family or adoption agency to exist unless it accepts homosexual couples.”

Hawai`i Free Press couldn’t find any atheist children’s charities for comment.

Hirono signed on as a cosponsor September 13, 2011 and Hanabusa signed on December 23,  but their support isn’t worth much.  According to GovTrack.us, “This bill has a 0% chance of being enacted.”
