Bipartisan Bills present opportunity for Hawaii Jones Act LNG Ship Exemption
Caribbean Business, (Puerto Rico) February 14, 2013
Last week, U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, introduced bipartisan legislation to reduce the regulatory process to export natural gas to North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries, Japan and other U.S. allies, a move supporters say will bolster strategic relationships, reduce the trade deficit and create U.S. jobs. The measure could also provide the opportunity to expand a Jones Act exemption for Puerto Rico on shipments of liquefied natural gas, which is a requirement for the success of the plan by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority to convert its existing power generation to natural gas from imported oil. The conversion is essential to bringing down gas prices and complying with new federal air quality standards. Hawaii also is looking to boost its use of natural gas, and it will need a Jones Act exemption as well. It's time to strike on this issue now!
