Hawaii Welfare Recipients 2nd Healthiest in US: 75% Not Disabled

The US Census today released nationwide statistics on the rate of disability among recipients of government assistance.  In 2011, nearly 46.0 million people, or 19.8 percent of the civilian non-institutionalized population aged 18 years and older, received income based government assistance through SSI, SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, or other government assistance.

Hawaii welfare recipients have the second-lowest disability rates in the US.  Here are the numbers:

Hawaii: 204,358 receive Government Assistance: 

  • 25.2% are Disabled (2nd lowest in the US)

Types of Disability:

  • 13.0% have a cognitive disability (6th lowest in US)
  • 15.1% have ambulatory disability (2nd lowest in US)
  • 13.6% have self-care/independent living disability (5th lowest in US)
