Honolulu ranks 30th of top 200 US cities in job growth
By News Release @ 7:56 PM :: 8815 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment

The 2010 Milken Institute Best-Performing Cities Index ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. The components include job, wage and salary, and technology growth. In most years, these give a good indication of the underlying structural performance of regional economics. The full report can be downloaded here

Honolulu has risen from 100th to 55th overall in the combined rankings based on eight measures of job growth used by Milken.  The brightest spot for Honolulu is its ranking of 30th in “short term job growth” comparing employment numbers for April 2009 with April 2010.

Honolulu’s move from 100th to 55th ranks 13th in the rate of rise, but Honolulu remains held back by a ranking of 175th in “High-Tech GDP Location Quotient” and a ranking of 194th in “Number of Highly Concentrated High-Tech Industries”.  Obviously these measures demonstrate the failure of the $700 million dollar plus ACT 215/221 High Tech tax credit scam which taints many Hawaii high tech enterprises in the eyes of outside investors, but is very rewarding to politically connected insiders.
