By Grassroot Institute @ 1:33 AM :: 7073 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment

2011 Senate Bill 1449 (Relating to the sunset of government agencies)

  • Introduced by Sen. Donna Kim Mercado (D) on January 26, 2011, establishes the Hawaii Sunset Advisory Commission to regularly assess new and existing governmental agencies' proposal for or performance of duties and responsibilities; makes recommendations on legislative actions to implement its recommendations; and works in conjunction with the Legislature and state auditor.
  • The committee(s) on Public Safety, Government Operations, and Military Affairs has rescheduled its public hearing to Saturday, 2-12-2011 at 10 a.m. in conference room 229.

New government-created commission to assess government performance

Creating efficiency and transparency in government, while a worthwhile cause, is a daunting task. SB1449 is proposing to create a 12-person Hawaii Sunset Advisory Commission, made up of 8 members of the Legislature, along with 4 members from the general public who will be appointed by the governor. The commission will review reports submitted by government agencies and then make recommendations on “alteration, continuation, or reorganization” of those agencies.

Join in the discussion at the public hearing at the state Capitol scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at 10 a.m. in conference room 229.

Hawaii Votes is a free public service of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii. Its purpose is to inform citizens, community leaders, business people, media, and public officials about legislation that affects their families, schools, jobs and communities. The site empowers citizens to take a more active part in the democratic process, and hold their elected representatives accountable. Hawaii Votes gives users instant access to concise, plain language and objective descriptions of bills, substantive amendments, and votes that take place in the Hawaii Legislature. Unlike any other bill tracking utility, Hawaii Votes is unique because all legislative actions are described - not just those selected by a particular interest group. It is searchable by legislator, keyword, and 50 subject categories, so users can create their own custom "voting record guide." See the Web site at http://www.hawaiivotes.org.
