Ed Case calls for Massive Tax Hikes

Ed Case, Maui Time, September 15, 2011: “The Bush tax cuts can't be sustained. Some people call that a tax increase. I call it letting bad tax cuts expire. I think the vast majority of this island, state and county don't like government by battle, and don't like partisan gridlock. You may not like 100 percent of what you get from me….”

Mazie Hirono: Pass the Buffett Rule

Co-sign my open letter to Speaker John Boehner urging him to allow a clean up-or-down vote on President Obama's bold new "Buffett Rule," which would ensure that millionaires and billionaires stop paying lower tax rates than the rest of us do. We will hand-deliver your signature to his office next week.

(As usual, Mazie hasn’t done her homework. For a touch of reality, see the AP Fact Check: Are the Rich Taxed Less than Secretaries?)

Schatz: Statement on President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Plan

News Release from www.Hawaii.gov/gov September 19, 2011

Honolulu – Today, President Obama unveiled his plan to further reduce the nation’s deficit in addition to the American Jobs Act. Some of the potential impact from the American Jobs Act on Hawai'i includes:

  • 30,000 small businesses to receive a payroll tax cut
  • $174.9 million for highway and transit modernization projects for about 2,300 local jobs
  • $122.3 million to support 1,500 educator and first responder jobs
  • $82.2 million to improve school infrastructure that will support 1,100 jobs
  • 17,000 long-term unemployed workers to go back to work by reforming the unemployment insurance system

Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, who is Acting Governor, today released the following statement:

“In Hawai'i, we share President Obama’s approach in his plan to reduce the nation’s deficit – getting people back to work by creating jobs and investing in our priorities, like education and healthcare, all while living within our means. It is clear that we need to all work together and do our part now to grow a sustainable economy for future generations.”
