Medal of Honor Ceremony at MCAS Ewa Field
By Tom Berg @ 11:58 PM :: 7030 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12

From Office of Councilmember Tom Berg

The ceremony honoring our Medal of Honor recipients will be held Tuesday, October 2 at former MCAS Ewa Field beginning at 9:00AM and will last approximately thirty minutes. The gathering will be held at MCAS Ewa Field - Pearl Harbor battlefield and home base for eleven Medal of Honor recipient pilots during the week long celebration of the 100th anniversary of Marine aviation.

The commemoration will include a United States Marine Corps Honor Guard and United States Air Force rifle salute. MCAS Ewa was the birthplace of USMC aviation in the Pacific in 1940 when Ewa Mooring Mast Field became the base for MAG-21. Charles Lindbergh, Medal of Honor recipient, was awarded the medal as a civilian pilot in 1927 and went on to fly air combat missions as a civilian pilot advisor to the US Marine Corps and US Army Air Force in the Pacific. Lindbergh received his advanced air combat training at MCAS Ewa Field in the USMC F4-U Corsair in 1944.

"Thank you for this tribute with all of us. MCAS Ewa holds a unique position not only in the Corps but also with the CMOH Society. It is especially fitting as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Marine Aviation," said Thomas Wilkerson, President & CEO of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

Also planned for the ceremony is a flyover by a vintage WW-II era SNJ by famed airshow pilot Bruce Mayes of Pacific Warbirds. This special Medal of Honor ceremony is being arranged hosted by Councilman Tom Berg and the Honolulu City Council District I office with an official Honorary Certificate presentation from the Honolulu City Council and official proclamation dedicating the week to Medal of Honor recipients on behalf of the Council.
