HONOLULU – GOVERNING magazine announced today that Hawai‘i Human Services Director Lillian Koller has been selected as a “Public Official of the Year” for her leadership in bringing about widespread improvements at the State Department of Human Services (DHS) over the past five years, including an overhaul of the child welfare system.

The State is asking the High Court to overturn the Hawai`i State Supreme Court’s January, 2008 decision holding that the United States Congress in the 1993 “Apology Resolution” had forbidden the State from selling or exchanging any of the State’s approximately 1.2 million acres of so-called “Ceded Lands”, unless and until a political settlement was reached with Native Hawaiians. The State argued to the High Court that the United States Congress had done no such thing and that Congress has no power to try to control the sale of lands belonging to a sovereign state.

Obama’s choice of representation is yet another sign that free speech would be at risk of being strangled by political correctness and lawsuits under an Obama Presidency.

As Big Island residents and businesses try to make sense of the economic news dominating the local, national and global media, it is critical to keep an objective perspective on what we need to do as a state to overcome current economic challenges.

In a September 15 New York Post editorial, CNN and BBC contributor Amir Taheri writes that, according to Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Senator Obama in June told visiting Iraqi officials that President Bush’s government was in a ‘”state of weakness and political confusion’” so the negotiations should be postponed until after the election.

Your house is not the only target.  The bill also slams hospitals.   In the midst of Hawai`i’s medical crisis, a new 100,000 sq foot hospital would be required to fork out $545,100 to the county.  A 100,000 sq foot commercial center would be hit with $496,800 in new fees.  A new 100,000 sq foot school?  $108,000.  Nursing home?  $190,300.  Also targeted churches, industry, and warehouses.
