Democrats make up 70% of poll respondents—But Aiona #1 in favorability

Hannemann Campaign: Abercrombie is 2 points ahead

Inouye goes negative on Ed Case for going negative on Hannemann

KITV: U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye said he has read or heard negative comments attributed to both the Mufi Hannemann and Neil Abercrombie campaigns for governor that "walk a very fine line between 'fair' and 'foul.' We're all better than that," he said. (No, they’re not.)

Inouye also referred to comments former U.S. Rep. Ed Case made Saturday about Hannemann when he endorsed Abercrombie for governor.

Case called Hannemann "the most dangerous politician in a generation." Hannemann called that negative campaigning at its worst.

"It is one thing to endorse a candidate, it is quite another to tear down and gut the opposition by engaging in character assassination.... Let's keep it clean," Inouye said in his e-mail.

(Read Inouye's full statement.)

HNN: "In recent days, mean spirited comments and negative statements were made about two good Democratic candidates, Mufi Hannemann and Kirk Caldwell. It is one thing to endorse a candidate, it is quite another to tear down and gut the opposition by engaging in character assassination" said Inouye in the statement.

Shapiro: Inouye vs. Case — George Lucas style: Inouye, missing the ironic similarity between Case’s attack on Hannemann and Caldwell and his own earlier screed against Case, accuses Case of “mean spirited comments and negative statements” against good Democrats that “walk a very fine line between ‘fair’ and ‘foul.’ “

I applaud Inouye’s efforts to clean up this election, but the referee has to honor the rules more than anyone else on the field.

Abercrombie fundraiser: “I would come see the devil for Willie Nelson” says attendee

Nelson has lived on Maui for 35 years, but admits he is registered to vote in Texas and not in Hawaii.

Abercrombie joked about their earlier years. “When we first got together, when Kris Kristofferson and Willie were here some years ago, Kris came up and said, ‘Willie, he looks more like you than you do!,'" Abercrombie quipped.

Among the supporters who attended the fundraiser bash was former congressional candidate Ed Case, who endorsed Abercrombie for governor on Saturday. In doing so, Case called Abercrombie’s Democratic rival, Mufi Hannemann, “the most dangerous politician in a generation.”

Free Willie: Most of the people appeared to be on the Team AFG bandwagon, although some — naturally — only came for Nelson. “I would come see the devil for Willie Nelson,” one former state Senate staffer said.

Police: Naeole-Beason complaint filed (The magnificent and glorious Hawaii County Council)

Beason fled to Alaska a little more than a week ago, claiming (Hawaii County Council member Emily) Naeole-Beason beat him, forced him to turn over his monthly Social Security check and, after he left the state, sent a Big Island man to Alaska to threaten him.

He said he left the marriage and hid at a friend's farm in Puna for about a month before moving to Juneau. The couple was married Oct. 24.

Naeole-Beason hasn't returned repeated messages left Saturday and Monday on her cell phone, office phone and with her campaign staff….

Beason also forwarded a threatening text message he claimed came from Naeole-Beason. The profanity-laced message could not be verified as coming from Naeole-Beason's phone

Former Student Member of Education Board 'Can't Sugarcoat Toguchi's Horrible Leadership'

The former student member of the Hawaii State Board of Education says the panel suffers from the "horrible leadership" of its chairman, Garrett Toguchi….

"But I think the main thing is the board members could get along a little better," he said. "It was a shock to see how childish sometimes adults could be — because that's stuff you learned in kindergarten: Get along."

He told Civil Beat: "I can't really sugarcoat Toguchi's horrible leadership."

Caldwell, Hannemann smarting from Kalihi tax flap

It’s disturbing how Caldwell and Hannemann have deflected responsibility for the hardship these people are suffering, saying it was a decision by anonymous tax assessors and not a policy call by the administration.

The last time I looked, the mayor and managing director had oversight authority for city bureaucrats, and either they were asleep at the wheel or chose not to head off this disaster for the homeowners to squeeze out a few more property tax dollars at their expense.

New flood maps may force Hawaii residents to purchase insurance

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Homeowners and businesses along the South facing shores of Oahu (Kaena Point to Portlock) and Kauai may soon be required by law to purchase flood insurance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will soon adopt new maps identifying high hazard flood zones. Hundreds, maybe even thousands of homes that are not currently in high risk flood areas will be re-classified into high risk areas.

"So for those folks who have a federally backed mortgage, they will be notified that they will have to purchase flood insurance" said Carol Tyau-Beam, an engineer with the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

People can find out which flood zone they live in by looking at the maps at the following web address, http://gis.hawaiinfip.org/fhat/.

Leader of Calif-Hawaii drug ring gets 27 years

Eustorgio Flores had faced a maximum sentence of life in prison when he was sentenced Tuesday. A Fresno jury convicted the 50-year-old Tulare resident in April of methamphetamine and cocaine distribution, distribution of meth near an elementary school and other charges.

Prosecutors described Flores as the leader of a San Joaquin Valley-based drug-dealing network that regularly supplied a Maui resident with drugs flown over on commercial airlines.

The resident, Patrick Aniban, received a 20-year prison sentence after authorities seized six pounds of meth and 18 pounds of cocaine at his Maui home.

Hawaii man sues: claims video game is too addicting

The lawsuit alleges that he is so addicted, he can't do daily activities like get up, get dressed, bathe or communicate with family and friends.  (But somehow he did manage to contact a lawyer and file a lawsuit.) Smallwood says the company, NCSOFT of South Korea, did not display proper warning that the game could become addicting…. U.S. District Court Judge Alan Kay is allowing the lawsuit.

Hawaii receives grant to control health insurance premiums

The funding will help improve oversight of proposed insurance premium increases, aid action against insurers seeking what are perceived to be unreasonable rate hikes, and ensure that consumers receive value from their premium dollars, according to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services….

The funding will most likely go to updating the state’s software to communicate with the federal government’s computer system, according to Lloyd Lim, Health Branch Administrator for the Hawaii Insurance Division, who said the federal government was still in the process of working out details of the grant.

Dem Moneyman buys Winter White House: Obama planning to retire to Kailua?

President Barack Obama's "Winter White House," the beachfront home in Kailua where the Obamas vacationed in December 2008 and 2009, has been bought by a Maryland company managed by a nephew of Hawaii real estate baron Harry Weinberg.

(Buying now is probably a good move.  In 2012, when Obama is tossed out of office, the economy will pick up and the price will rise.)

Glenn Weinberg of Owings Mills, Md., and his wife, Debra, have contributed at least $73,000 over the past decade to fund mostly Democratic politicians….

"The buyers have never met President Obama, although his interest in the property may have piqued theirs," Cavasso said. "They were not straw buyers."
