600 evacuees in West Maui hotels to be locked out? Safe Harbor program expires
HNN: … Hundreds of displaced Lahaina residents could be locked out of hotel rooms this weekend — if they don’t register with either FEMA or the American Red Cross.
The Safe Harbor program expires at 10 p.m. Friday.
But more than 600 residents have not taken the necessary step of registering to remain in temporary housing….
Up until now, residents could remain without showing proof of eligibility, said Brad Kierseman, of the American Red Cross.
“In order for the state to be reimbursed for the cost of these hotels, the Red Cross to be reimbursed, we have to be able to prove the eligibility of the people in the hotels.”…
The American Red Cross has been providing shelter to about 7,800 people in West Maui since Aug. 8, when a wildfire consumed the town of Lahaina. The agency will continue to assist undocumented residents or those under the Compact of Free Association.
Others should register through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Gov. Josh Green stressed the registration information will not be given to Immigration officials and will not threaten anyone’s status, but will assure they can get long-term housing and other services. That could include thousands in grant money….
Kierseman said some people on the list of unregistered may have left Maui to live on another island or state….

When Kula needed water to stop wildfire, it got a trickle
AP: … Hours before devastating fires scorched the historic town of Lahaina on Maui, Kyle Ellison labored to save his rental house in Kula, a rural mountain town 24 miles away, from a different blaze.
As high winds whipped burning trees and grass, Ellison and his landlord struggled with plummeting water pressure. Ellison had to wait for pots to slowly fill in the sink before running them to the fire; his landlord wielded a garden hose with little more than a trickle. Firefighters had to rush away for half-hour stretches to find a working fire hydrant to refill their tanker, and every time they did, the fire gained.
“It’s a very disconcerting feeling when the fire department shows up and they don’t have water,” Ellison said….
The lack of backup power for critical pumps seriously hindered firefighting in Kula, county water director John Stufflebean told The Associated Press. Once the winds knocked out electricity, pumps were unable to push water up into tanks and reservoirs that were key to maintaining pressure.
“If all those (pumps) had had generators, I think there is a pretty good chance we could have kept up,” Stufflebean said….

There have been plenty of dialogue, back-and-forth discussions, and excuses, but no RAB meetings since the March 2022 meeting….
