KITV: … The Commission has been under pressure, including from Congress, since video surfaced of electric lines igniting brush early on Aug. 8. Whether that or a later spark caused the inferno that roared through Lahaina is the question that right now only Maui County Fire is investigating.
Maui County is suing Hawaiian Electric, blaming it for the fire and the county is also a defendant in scores of lawsuits — some blaming the fire department….
So, even though the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is assisting, there are concerns the department findings may not be impartial…
Senate Consumer Protection Chair Jarrett Keohokalole asked Yost, “Don’t you see a conflict of interest presented by the fact that Maui County is responsible for the causation investigation?”…
The commissioner said he’d hope the report details the federal agency’s conclusions. “I think all of us are interested in seeing what ATF said — you know independent from Maui fire,” he said.
“I agree with you on that,” state Sen. Herbert “Tim” Richards responded. “That’s why if we had an open docket then you could have that clearinghouse to bring that information in.”
The senators added language to the resolution to instruct the PUC to demand the ATF findings and passed it on to the full Senate on a unanimous vote….
The county said the county charter requires the fire prevention bureau to investigate large fires, but did not respond to whether the lawsuits its involved with will make conclusions questionable.
The state Attorney General’s investigation will not include the cause of the fire….

EPA calls for mediator at Red Hill community meetings
SA: …Meetings have often been contentious, with members of the CRI and from the community frequently accusing officials of withholding information and dodging questions. In January officials informed the CRI that they would not attend the January meeting because the December meeting “did not go well” and that they wanted to establish new “operating procedures and ground rules.”…
The CRI is made up of a mixture of local residents and activists along with people directly affected by the Red Hill water crisis…
CRI Chair Marti Townsend told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser she believes “the EPA is appealing to the Navy’s desire to lock down the conversation on Red Hill….

Speed camera measure fast tracks through Legislature
KHON: …From vehicle sensors, cameras and devices to capture photos and videos of license plates of speeding cars, a Senate bill would create the state’s automated speed enforcement program. However, the original plan to put speed cameras on highways is being scaled back.
One of the latest amendments made to the bill proposed putting speed cameras in school and work zones in each county. Now, the version of the bill that’s still alive would only put speed cameras at the 10 existing red light camera sites….
