A judge is forcing Hawaii to give wildfire investigation documents to lawyers handling lawsuits

AP: … A judge on Friday forced the Hawaii attorney general's office to turn over to lawyers involved in the hundreds of lawsuits over last summer's Maui wildfires all documents, interviews and data collected by the outside team hired to investigate the disaster.

Attorneys representing plaintiffs suing over the August fires filed a motion last month asking a judge to compel the state provide them with the material gathered by the Fire Safety Research Institute, which was hired by the state to investigate….

During a Friday hearing on the island of Maui, state Deputy Attorney General David Matsumiya told Judge Peter Cahill the state is concerned that releasing information could prompt the six people who haven't been interviewed yet to change their stories….

David Minkin, an attorney representing Maui County, suggested to the judge that the investigative process was tainted.

Investigators “showed up in Lahaina, said we're here from the AG's office and started talking to people,” without informing them of their rights, he said….

Rail Fail: HART CEO ‘May be gone next year’

HNN: … Kahikina says she was speaking to a potential recruit for her deputy position.

“I told him I really don’t what’s happening with my contract. I may be gone next year,” said Kahikina.

“It’s very difficult to recruit somebody who is unsure of who their boss is going to be,” she added.

“That’s interesting because I really hadn’t heard of this issue before today,” said Chun Brunngraber (without snickering) ….

One board member worries about the delayed contract talks.

“I just want to voice my concern that this particular item has been deferred for the last several months,” said HART board member Kika Bukoski.

“I think the longer we take to make this decision, the more it’s going to impact the project and make it more difficult for us to bring in qualified candidates,” he said….

Usual Suspects Rally Against Jews at UH

HNN: … (as the Muslims continue to rape their hostages), two dozen people (of the usual suspects) gathered at UH Manoa’s John Wise Field Friday afternoon to take a stand against the violence in favor of the Muslims.

“This is a sacred space for us …” said Cynthia Franklin, (aka usual suspect) Founder of UH’s Students and Faculty for Justice in Palestine….  ”…humanity, humanity?” said Bronson Azama, President of UH Manoa’s undergraduate student government….  ”…create art,” said Samantha Avila Gomez, member of Students and Faculty for Justice in Palestine….

(QUESTION: Are these lines written by AI bots?)

Students and faculty are asking UH to end their strategic partnership with Israel.

Israel has supported UH with research conducted at the university including funding from the U.S. Israel Bi-national Science Foundation. And in 2022, former Gov. David Ige signed an agreement with Israel’s general consult that would elevate that partnership.

UH’s Board of Regents Chair Gabriel Lee released the following statement.

“The UH Board of Regents appreciates the passionate perspectives shared relating to the conflicts in Gaza and Israel as well as other matters. Board of Regents leadership will review the requests in consultation with the administration and regents. The board looks forward to guiding UH on a path that advances Hawaiʻi and our people in collaboration with the entire UH community.”….

‘Labor Shortage’ -- Garbage Piles Up at Apartments, Condos

SA: Large bags of trash littered the ground as they spilled out of the yellow waste bins at the ParkGlen at Waikele townhouse complex this past week — the result of a week of missed trash pickups at the property.

Missed trash pickups have become the norm for multiple apartment, condominium and townhouse properties in West Oahu, bringing maggots, foul smells and a sense of frustration among residents.

Kylie Bagio, who manages multiple properties including ParkGlen, said that since she began working at ParkGlen in August, she was made aware that West Oahu Aggregate, the company that services the property, was short-staffed….

Opening more discussion on the proposed water source agreement in Kula

MN: … The agreement would allow Free Market Ventures, LLC to secure rights to purchase a 272-acre parcel in Kula to develop water wells and associated infrastructure. Each well has an expected pump capacity of between 800,000 and 1.5 million gallons of water per day.

The company also plans to develop a sustainable-energy microgrid system to power the well pumps and other project elements.

To understand the agreement’s impacts on Maui County, I requested a financial analysis of the water agreement from the Department of Water Supply, which was provided to the Water and Infrastructure Committee on April 1. The analysis discussed the wells’ multiple purposes, possible water-rate increases and policy factors beyond cost. To read the 12-page analysis, visit https://tinyurl.com/UpcountryWater.

The Water and Infrastructure Committee has set a tentative meeting date of May 16 to discuss Resolution 24-47 ….
