LFR Applauds McConnell’s Opposition to Law of the Sea Treaty

Momentum Shifting Against LOST as Potential Damage to U.S. Interests Are Exposed

News Release from www.Let’sLoseLOST.com

PHILADELPHIA – In an interview with PowerLine’s Scott Johnson last week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R – KY) openly opposed the controversial Law of the Sea Treaty.

“I don’t support it, of course,” McConnell said, “and I don’t think it will pass.”

McConnell’s statement is a welcome development for Let Freedom Ring, a non-profit, nonpartisan public policy membership organization, which has been working to gain supporters who oppose the treaty. To date, more than 13,000 letters have been sent to legislators through Let Freedom Ring’s LetsLoseLOST.com website, and 28 U.S. senators have signed a letter acknowledging their opposition to the treaty.

“We’re pleased with the momentum shift that’s occurring, with more and more individuals opposing ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty,” said Colin Hanna, President of Let Freedom Ring. “LOST poses dangers to U.S. sovereignty and freedom as well as to our economy, and we need as many senators as possible to oppose its ratification.”

The Law of the Sea Treaty would do great damage to U.S. military and intelligence operations, while forcing the United States to hand over proprietary technology to countries actively hostile to the countries’ interests. It would also create a system for resolving disputes lying outside the jurisdiction of the U.S. legal system, leaving American citizens and businesses at the mercy of international tribunals whose members are not necessarily adherents to Western political or legal traditions. It also requires U.S. businesses to pay steep royalty fees for things like energy production, which drives already high prices in the States even higher.

“LOST is bad for America, bottom line,” said Hanna. “There is no guarantee that the treaty’s terms will remain the same as they are at ratification and there is a simple amendment process that is not subject to U.S. approval, which greatly undermines our sovereignty and is, at its core, unconstitutional.”

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed an amendment that prohibits funding to implement the Law of the Sea Treaty, which is helpful to prevent implementation, but it does not ultimately protect the United States’ long-term economic and strategic interests. The only measure that can create these types of protections is failure to ratify LOST. Let Freedom Ring urges all Americans to contact their legislators to advocate for a “no” vote on ratification.

Let Freedom Ring is a non-profit, nonpartisan public policy membership organization, with a three-pronged mission: to promote constitutional government, economic freedom and traditional values. The organization was formed to counter the attacks of anti-conservative groups on patriotic candidates as well as attacks on the important issues of our day, including family, marriage, the economy, energy, abortion, health care and foreign policy, to name a few. Let Freedom Ring also works to keep constituents and the media informed about what our founding fathers’ intentions were and how history shapes laws and our culture today.
